Brand: nanamica

Season: Fall/Winter 2021

Buy: nanamica’s New York flagship

Editor’s Notes: Though New York isn’t quite the shopping mecca it may have been in its heyday, there are still plenty of boutiques worth popping into both as a tourist or local. Case in point: nanamica’s New York flagship, which opened in late August 2020.

Takes guts (or a death wish) to open a brick-and-mortar during a global pandemic but nanamica knows what it’s doing.

Helmed by Eiichiro Homma, who also oversees Goldwin lines like The North Face Purple Label, nanamica is a veritable institution in Japan and is earning an international reputation for its reliable, wearable daily drivers. Doesn’t hurt that cool-kid stylist Akio Hasegawa has overseen its recent seasonal imagery.

The New York outpost is nanamica’s first dedicated American store, though it sells to various retailers across the country. It’s hosted some of the final Western TNFPL drops but pretty much just sells nanamica now, though the recent nanamica x TNF collab might be in stock.

It’s not officially a celebration of the store’s first year in business but an exclusive Fall/Winter 2021 collection will soon arrive at nanamica NY — yet another reason to stop by.

A few nanamica classics appear here, all in hardy fabrics and boosted by subtle bits of high-end flair. Sounds like jargon but it’s true: there’s a field down jacket that looks like a basic harrington but actually has a water-repellant finish on the outside, a Coolmax lining, and Goldwin’s Kodenshi down inside, which helps balance body temps even in brisk weather.

There’s also a set of garment-dyed T-shirts and snap-button hoodies, which feature embroidery, oversized cuts, and artwork from illustrator Aki Ohnishi; I couldn’t find a website for Aki but perhaps they prefer the low-key life, which I respect.

I mean, that’s basically nanamica’s appeal: it’s good, low-key stuff. Like the Japanese TNFPL exclusives and much of The North Face Japan’s output, nanamica’s garments focus foremostly on thoughtful fabrication.

Always one to set the scene, nanamica once again takes the ocean as its backdrop for the launch of its Spring/Summer 2022 lookbook in which it explores the niche of “heart-warming life-tech wear.”

Activewear, loungewear, techwear, Gorpcore, Normcore, Scumbro…there’s plenty of styles of function-focused apparel types, most of which you’ve likely heard of already but, I’ll assume heart-warming life-tech wear is probably a new one.

The term, coined by nanamica, has been adopted to describe the design direction utilized for its Spring/Summer 2022 collection – one which focalizes comfort in the pursuit of creating garments that function throughout all facets of daily life.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CXQiVlNrT8x/

This concept has been broken down into a three-part structure; heading to the office, home-office wear, and OOAL (the brand’s One Ocean, All Lands motto).

Each part comes with its own set of requirements, built into garments within the collection – heading to the office, for example, is the provision of fast-drying, moisture-wicking, GORE-TEX-equipt lines, such as the tech suit.

As is expected from nanamica, a functional core is present throughout, providing versatility, comfort, and protection from the elements, without sacrificing its minimal, genderless aesthetic. Within, you’ll find cargo pants, anoraks, shirting, tees, short options, and more.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CXI6_TpPl8F/

Similar to previous seasons, the palette consists of super-wearable tones, including a base of black, navy, and ecru, extending to beige, grey, and olive.

nanamica Spring/Summer 2022 will be available to shop online next year.

nanamica & MONOCLE Execute GORE-TEX With Finesse

nanamica bridges the oceans and seas between Japan and Britain with a limited-edition release alongside lifestyle brand MONOCLE, offering up a clean, technically-sound GORE-TEX Cruiser jacket.

When your apparel lines exceed thanks to their minimalist designs, high-quality constructions, and functional performance capabilities, collaboration is as intended – a luxury, not a necessity.

This much is true for nanamica, as its tunnel-vision focus on building the perfect contemporary wardrobe has kept it (to an extent) isolated, fixated on evolving its crafts to best suit the purposes for which they are intended.

Spring/Summer 2022 brings a welcomed surprise in the form of a special edition collaboration with MONOCLE, bringing together a multi-faceted lifestyle into the nanamica’s carefully curated design sphere.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CaMYX8jv-8R/

MONOCLE, at its heart, is a magazine founded in 2007, which has gone on to sell 80,000 copies per issue and has a growing subscriber list of 24,000. Though on the surface, the collaboration may seem out of the left-field, the brand’s understanding of global affairs, business, culture, and design balances well against nanamica’s apparel expertise.

On offer is an excellent execution of GORE-TEX, without some of the extravagant bells and whistles you’d expect from your go-to hiking jacket. Taking direct inspiration from the US Army ECWCS Jacket, the Cruiser is comprised of a 3L Cotton Twill GORE-TEX fabric that provides excellent wind and rainproofing while allowing moisture to escape.

Its military inspiration shines clearly through the oversized flap pockets, chest security pocket with a fastener, and waist pocket that doubles up as a hand warmer – in an easy-wearing navy hue.

The nanamica x MONOCLE GORE-TEX Cruiser Jacket will be released online from February 27.

Two great tastes that taste great together! nanamica and The North Face‘s Japan-only Purple Label imprint are back at it, dropping a special capsule available only at Japanese nanamica stores.

Sucks for us across the pond but, hey, why not admire the stuff?

Here’s the thing: nanamica technically is the driving force behind The North Face Purple Label (nanamica founder Eiichiro Homma oversees TNFPL) so, just like last year’s nanamica & TNFPL tie-up, this isn’t really a collaboration.

It’s more of a self-indulgent exclusive, if you’re being picky, but if all indulgent drops were this good, I wouldn’t mind.

As usual, Homma has cooked up a concise capsule of kick-ass TNFPL staples in seasonal shapes and hues for this collection, including lightweight yellow trail shirts, logo-laden striped tees, color-blocked hoodies, field jackets, TNFPL’s signature self-belted pants, and some bags branded with that iconic purple The North Face patch.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Cay_rEorSAD/

It all speaks to the versatile nature of TNFPL and nanamica’s effortless cool.

TNFPL, after all, specializes in taking retro The North Face garments and transforming them into ultra-covetable updated garments barely recognizable when compared to the classics, so this tight lil’ springtime capsule fits right into its ethos.

If you need a refresher (and apparently so, going by the comments on TNFPL’s Instagram page): yes, The North Face Purple Label is only available in Japan due to licensing conflicts (Goldwin is the exclusive Japanese TNF manufacturer).

Of course, it’s unbelievably easy to proxy Purple Label from Japanese resale sites or simply purchase it from a store that ships internationally, even if you live across the sea.

This nanamica-only line is an exception, however, ‘cuz it’s only available in-store. And, given the ease of which they dished this drop, it’ll probably not be the duo’s last go-round.

Everyday Unordinary Gear for Men & Women in nanamica FW22

Few brands do daily drivers better than nanamica. The Japanese technical label headed by Eiichi Homma — who also oversees Goldwin’s NORTH FACE PURPLE LABEL — is unmatched in crafting approachable gear for daily use, irrespective of climate.

Spring/Summer or Fall/Winter, nanamica takes it all in stride.

Its clothing is rooted in Heavy Duty Ivy, a retro Japanese fashion subculture informed by L.L. Bean and Ralph Lauren, but updates the preppy, post-trad styling of the era with high-spec fabrications appropriate for each season.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CfBXVQJu517/

nanamica Fall/Winter 2022, already rolling out on nanamica’s web store and its stores, demonstrates this thought technicality with items like its new coaches jackets and peacoats, waterproof on the outside and lined with merino wool on the inside.

Fabric experimentation yields a bespoke chino cotton that’s quick-drying but retains the crispness that one would expect from the ivy-friendly textile. Primaloft and GORE-TEX also appear throughout, equal parts insulating and breathable.

Elements of environmentally-conscious design crop up here and there, like in the flourine-free C-Zero water repellent coating and sweatpants partially made of recycled cotton waste scraps. nanamica isn’t zero impact but it’s making some intelligent moves to slightly push the needle in that direction.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CfBZxU3uX7t/

Perhaps the most notable element of nanamica Fall/Winter 2022, beyond the technical and ecological achievements, is the debut of the Japanese brand’s womenswear collection, which feels a tad overdue.

“It has been 20 years since the start of Nanamica, and we just started a women’s line this year,” Homma said. “The current age calls for gender-free and diversity, but I think it is all right for women to have a duality in expressing herself; one side that is working busily in society, and also her very feminine side.”

“My hope is for such clothing for the woman who embraces how she herself feels, before the clothing itself, will let her feel comfortable and cool in various scenes of her daily life, from chilling, working, and living.”

Indeed, we all ought to aspire to feeling comfortable and cool, chilling in nanamica.

GORE-TEX Incoming: nanamica x PUMA Suede VTG

Getting a fresh pair of suede sneakers wet is soul wrenching. Soul destroying, in fact. Whether it’s a singular drop or a bucket-load of rain water, that plush, smooth suede is never getting back to its prime, no matter how much waterproof spray you’ve coated them in.

A regular victim of such a heinous crime is PUMA’s Suede VTG, a sneaker that when fresh looks slick, yet one drop of dampness and they’re basically dead meat.

Luckily this season Japanese label nanamica is righting PUMA’s wrongs by dousing the classic silhouette in a protective coat of GORE-TEX, for a two-piece capsule that’s set to drop at the Japanese brand’s website imminently.

It’s a well-known fact that something is made instantly better with a healthy splash of GORE-TEX, so that it’s taken so long for this to happen is pretty much a crime in itself.

Aesthetically, the new-look Suede VTG is exactly what you’d expect from nanamica. In-keeping with its timeless and neutral design concept, each sneaker adorns monotone looks of “Parisian Night” and “Vintage Khaki” respectively, with subtle co-branding on the tongue and at the rear for good measure.

For PUMA, collaborations aren’t anything new after teaming up with the likes of Butter Goods, AMI, and Liberty, to name a few, already this year.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CclxBTqBwGM/

Similarly nanamica is no stranger to a link-up, with The North Face Purple Label and MONOCLE having their say on signature brand pieces in recent months.

While at first glance nanamica x PUMA might look like any other Suede VTG aesthetically, functionally it’s leagues above because, as we know, everything is made better with a splash of GORE-TEX.

Nanamica & Awake NY Make a Case for the Nylon Tux

nanamica’s collaborative roster just acquired another noteworthy player: Awake NY.

The nanamica x Awake NY collab marries the worlds of both labels, resulting in a collection where nanamica’s performance technologies meet Awake NY’s streetwear flair.

Technically-elevated suiting leads the lineup, bringing together the worlds of nanamica and Awake NY. Said suiting materializes as blazer and cargo pant combos comprised of nanamica’s outdoor-ready materials and the stylish spirit of the Big Apple.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch4XHRCrF9a/

The plaid suit, as pictured above, sees a preferred Awake NY pattern printed atop a shell made of ALPHADRY, nanamica’s signature sweat-absorbing and quick-drying textile.

Meanwhile, the black Cordura nylon suit offers nylon’s sturdiness with cotton’s soft-to-touch feel. Contrast stitching is a pretty nice touch, too.

Visually appealing and performance enhanced, nanamica and Awake NY’s nylon suits undoubtedly give the Canadian tux a run for its money. If anything, this high-tech tailoring puts double denim in its lo-fi place.

It’s no secret that Awake NY is hailed for its cozy sweats (Rihanna is a fan). So, naturally, a healthy offering of comfy cotton-blend hoodies and sweatpants joins the collaborative mix.

The crest emblem stamped on each piece adds a note of Ivy League feels while capturing the collection’s collaborative effort with stylized co-branding.

After GORE-TEX PUMAs and the North Face’s Purple Label collab (which wasn’t really a collab), nanamica continues to do what it does best: effortlessly integrate performance and casualwear, which the Awake NY collab merely continues demonstrating.

The nanamica x Awake NY collection touches down on September 16 at SSENSE and END’s websites. With fall on the horizon, nanamica and Awake NY’s plaid suits and cozy hoodies are arriving in the nick of time.

One of These Waterproof Jackets Is Your New Best Friend

waterproof jackets

The passage out of summer is one full of meteorological obstacles. And, while any old waterproof jacket can keep you dry to a certain extent, when the rain is really pouring and the winds are up, your comfort lies in the hands of the fine details. We’re talking elasticated storm cuffs, taped zips, heat-trapping toggles, and the like.

Whether you’re looking ahead to winter too or just on the search for a waterproof layer to see you through the fall transition, we’ve rounded up the coats for you from Slam Jam. Ranging from technical expertise from and Wander, Stone Island Shadow Project, Snow Peak, and more, these are the best waterproof jackets for men this season.

Shell Jackets are a godsend during the transitional months. When it’s not quite cold enough for down coats, but some days do require layering, the shell jacket is the handy top layer that protects your whole look.

Cut from three-layer durable water-repellent PERTEX SHIELD fabric, this and wander waterproof jacket continues a legacy of flawless outerwear from the Japanese label.

Stone Island’s Shadow Project is where the sleekest of waterproof jackets can be found. Typified by understated detailing and best-in-class tech, this trench coat is going to see you through both fall and the depths of winter.

Moncler has serious credentials when it comes to waterproof jackets. Beginning life as a skiing brand, its jackets have summited mountains and seen out some of the worst conditions that the world has on offer.

Patagonia owner Yvon Chouinard recently gave away the company in a radical move to prove that now is a time for action against climate change. It’s just one more reason to cop a Patagonia piece for the fall wardrobe.

When it comes to retailers, few are as busy as Slam Jam. It feels like the Italian company is constantly working on a new collaboration and the recent work with Fila is up there with our favorites.

There’s a definite move toward more technical styles in fashion right now, but we shouldn’t forget that it’s still possible to get a high-end waterproof jacket that looks to classic styling cues.

Dime looks to two earth tones to position this jacket well within the realms of the fall wardrobe.

1017 ALYX 9SM opts for a classically sleek, black finish. Cut from PVC, this long coat isn’t at all in line with the technical, utilitarian selections in this roundup but it is waterproof.

Windproof and water-resistant, this soft shell jacket by Snow Peak looks and feels more like a hoodie but offers the protection of a fully-fledged waterproof jacket.

For Spring/Summer 23, nanamica continues its theme of heartwarming life-techwear in its ongoing bid to pursue unbeatable comfort.

The collection — which is presented in four different daily scenarios — is a continuation of last season, and features an array of unisex techwear, as well as gear just for women, which has been designed to reflect a feminine sensibility.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CmD-TvkPo0F/

For those not familiar with nanamica, where tf have you been?

Since its inception in Japan in 2003, nanamica — which translated basically means “house of the seven seas” — has been the mastermind behind projects like THE NORTH FACE Purple Label, as well as a myriad of other outdoors-focused partnerships.

There’s no doubt that nanamica’s passion lies in the neutrality of its products, transcending the boundaries of genre, age, or gender, focusing on style and functionality, as opposed to chasing trends.

This approach has undeniably seen it become one of the most forward-thinking outerwear labels on the globe, something that’s staggeringly apparent in its SS23 collection.

nanamica doesn’t mess about, nor does it cater, it chooses to deliver what could be needed at any given time, something laid bare with its four captured scenarios of: Heading to the Office, Home-Office Wear, One Ocean All Lands, and Any Time Works.

SS23 is described, by nanamica, as life-techwear, which for those not au fait is essentially everyday functionality. And, let’s be honest, who doesn’t need a splash of that in their life?

GORE-TEX Chuck Taylors by nanamica? Sure, Why Not

nanamica and Converse have found their way to each other, announcing a Chuck Taylor collaboration (it’s a first-time linkup for the two).

Priced at 22,000 yen (approx. $161), nanamica’s Chuck Taylors ditches the traditional constructions in favor of recycled cotton and rubber for the upper and outsole, respectively.

Like the Japanese label’s PUMA collab, the nanamica x Converse sneakers, too, arrive with a waterproof GORE-TEX lining, further reinforced by a branded tab on the heel.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Co_8i1Nv6vb/?hl=en

The shoe’s gusseted tongue combines with the high-tech lining for a Dragon Ball Z-level fusion of enhanced breathability and waterproof capabilities.

While Converse incorporated the advanced material in a few stateside styles, GORE-TEX is frequently utilized in Converse Japan’s offerings, especially those hailing from the Addict line.

Technical design aside, the nanamica x Converse All-Stars are really quite simple on the surface, much like the Japanese brand’s beloved techwear and other apparel.

nanamica’s famed deep navy shade blankets the upper, including laces and iconic All-Star patch, for a cohesive look. With dual branding on the insole to top it all off, the collaborative shoe manifests as a clean, understated spin to the already-simple Chucks.

What can I say? Minimalism wins again.

To the nanamica fans, Converse enthusiasts, and the lovers of subtle flex sneakers in between, nanamica’s Converse Chuck Taylors land on March 17 on nanamica’s webstore and physical stores as well as the Converse’s website and select stores.

The release is a couple of weeks out, but it’s perfect timing for those prepping their spring rotations.
